*** You're Invited! Senior Capstone Showcase - Thursday, May 23, 2019 ***
This year, seniors at Black River have created 3-D models and machines, crafted artistic and culinary masterpieces, and conducted social and scientific research. They have taught themselves new languages, composed and recorded their own music, and challenged themselves to create and publish work in a variety of ways. Come see it all!
When: Thursday, May 23, 2019 from 6:30-8:00PM
Where: Black River Lyceum, Large Ensemble Room, and Auxiliary Gym
Who: You’re invited! The Black River senior class of 2019 will showcase their Senior Capstone projects and research for all to see. Family, friends, community members, and students of all ages will find fun and interesting projects to enjoy, and are all invited to this event—that means you!
What: Over the course of their senior year, all seniors complete a Capstone paper and project that is a reflection of their own interests, knowledge, and abilities. Tables will be set up for viewing and activities, and seniors will be available to share their work with you and answer questions. This is a kid-friendly event with lots of opportunities for audience participation and manipulation of materials. What a great way to see where our elementary students are headed!
You don't want to miss this event! Come meet our seniors as they complete their culminating learning experience at Black River!

Dear Parent/Guardian:
Although summertime may mean a vacation from the classroom, it should never be a break in any child's intellectual development. Education research shows that children lose a great deal of what they have learned during idle summer months. Researchers have studied the “summer effect" on student achievement and their studies consistently show that student learning declines or remains stagnant during summer months. Students who keep their learning skills active during the summer months are better primed to return to school in the fall.
Our summer program, which is free of charge, will be a three week program for K – 5th grade students, starting July 8 and ending July 26. Classes will be held Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Curriculum will include math, language arts and physical activity. If your child will be attending summer school, we encourage your child to attend regularly for maximum benefit. Register HERE for the Summer Enrichment Program.
We strongly urge you to take advantage of this opportunity to enrich your student’s education. Early intervention in reading, writing and math will greatly increase your child’s likelihood of academic success in future years. Please contact Krista through email ([email protected]) if you would like further information.
To aide us in our preparation, we ask that you complete the form below and return it by April 17, 2019. Please note that all elementary classes will take place in the elementary building (students in grades K-5 in 2018/2019 school year). Drop off and pick up will take place at the main entrance.
Sincerely,
Krista Ekdahl and Summer School Staff

Head Lice Information:
In the United States, infestation with head lice is most common among elementary school children, and the household members of infested children. If you see any signs of head lice, please check your child at home or request that we check your child at school. We have staff members trained for identifying and removing lice and nits. The following are signs of lice: tickling or itchy feeling on the scalp, sores on the head, irritability from difficulty sleeping (lice are active at night). To help control a head lice outbreak in a school, children can be taught to avoid activities that may spread head lice.

Cell Phones and Carline
Carline during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up can be a very busy time of day, and the safety of our Black River students is of the utmost importance. Recently, there have been a number of parents on their cell phones during carline which goes against our school policy. Please refrain from calling, texting, or playing on your phone during carline as it takes your attention away from the people and traffic around you. If you are on your cell phone during this time, you will be kindly reminded of our policy. Thank you for your help in this matter and for keeping our kids safe.

Doctor Appointments and Early Dismissals
I understand that students may need to leave for doctor appointments or for the day a little early. If you could, I would appreciate either a note or email letting me know a day or two in advance. I like to plan for each day's lessons and activities in advance. If I know that your child will be leaving early this will greatly help me in planning! Now I understand some things come up that are out of our control and if that happens please just let me know as soon as you can. Thank you!
